Designer of the Week -Daisy-Head-Maisy
This week get to know Heather of Daisy-Head Maisy. She lives in the western suburbs of Chicago, Illinois and has 3 children. "...a daughter who is almost 12 (but going on 20~LOL), a son who is 7, and another son who is 2. My children are spaced out quite a bit so I'm dealing with everything from potty training to telling time to puberty~God help me! ;)"
See Heather's current eBay auctions: Daisy-Head-Maisy
JM: When started your love of creating?
HEATHER:I've always been the crafty type but
I really began developing my
skills within the last 12 years since I've had children. One of my
friends got me started painting on clothing then I learned a great
deal about clothing painting two years ago from a tutorial that Shelly
Pint (halfpintcreations, designerX) created when I was a member of her
group WDAS. As for everything else, I've learned a lot online and from
trial and error and perfecting a skill until I've mastered it.
JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?
HEATHER:I began selling my raggie hair bows on ebay fuve years ago, a year after that I expanded my product line to include tutus and discovered the boutique world, and now it has expanded to include boutique flip flops, tutu gowns and costumes, and some hand painted clothing.
I just closed my ebay store to move my product line to the Adagio Bleu Studios website (www.adagiobleu.com/catalog)
In a former life I was the director of promotional marketing for a
local suburban newspaper group where I sold advertising, wrote
features, and handled marketing and PR for clients. I was also in law
enforcement as a police records specialist and jail matron~and I loved
it, I miss that job a lot. It was a teriffic team environment.
JM: Do you remember the first thing you sold on eBay?
HEATHER:I sold a pair of ribbon daisy hair bows with vintage button centers(my dd was the model!) The pair sold for $7.99 if memory serves
JM: How did come up with your name?
HEATHER: My Grandmother's name was Daisy and she was a very special person in my life. She was this amazing knitter and she could whip out a sweater or a pair of slippers in the blink of an eye. I loved to sit and watch her work. She was a little Scottish woman with red hair and a thick brogue. She lived on coffee and home made cookies. She taught Highland dance in the basement of her home while my Grandfather played bagpipes for the students. My name honors her and it just sounds FUN~and my tag line is "Get your Fun On!"
JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?
HEATHER:I am the very proud founder and leader of Adagio Bleu Studios.
The thing that I think sets us apart is that we have virtually no
drama among our members, we all get along very well, we work together
well and truly care and support each other in our businesses and
personal lives as well.
Many of us talk on the phone quite often, we
have friday night chats and although we are close friends, we are
serious about what we're doing and being successful at it. We gently
nudge each other to learn and try new things and I love that about us.
(On a side note~8 of us are meeting in Las Vegas for a fun weekend and
it's almost here!)
JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?
HEATHER:My favorite thing are my new tutu gowns! I love trying new things with them. I took floral design classes and I love incorporating silk flowers, berries and accents at the top along with other embellishments. The embellishing is so fun and let's me stretch those creative muscles. The gowns have been very well received in the market too. They are wonderful not only as costumes or for pageants but many people are buying them for photo sittings and special birthdays.
JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?
HEATHER: I'd love to be able to sew. Believe it or not, I don't sew although I've tried to learn a few times. It's just not something I am good at. BTW someone needs to tell this to my growing fabric stash please! (Have you ever met anyone with a fabric stash that didn't sew? There is something intrinsically wrong with that I'm afraid! LOL!!) I love fabric so much that I've created original designs (my raggie bows & flip flops) to still be able use fabrics to get around my sewing handicap! I need a 12 step program for my fabric issues. It brings to mind one of my all time favorite quotes, "Necessity is the mother of invention"
JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?
HEATHER:
Back in time~and
get to know my Maternal Grandparents when they were young married people in the 1940's.
(was that answer too Marty McFly?)
JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?
HEATHER: Learning new things, spending time with my family, going to the movies or watching documentaries on TV, doing home improvement projects and decorating, gardening and singing.
JM: Anything else you would like to add?
HEATHER:This has been an honor for me and I'd like to thank you very much for this opportunity to share a little bit about myself.
Do you have a question that you are dying to ask Heather? Comment about something she said or designed? Post it here and she will answer it!
